Maryland Health Connection
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act led to the creation of the Maryland Health Connection, which is the state’s health insurance marketplace and is managed by the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange.
Families and individuals who are not insured by their jobs can purchase coverage through the marketplace. Enrollees can compare health insurance plans with it, and tax credits are available to those who qualify. Additionally, it gives low-income Marylanders access to Medicaid enrollment.

How it works:
- Receive information.
MHC will contact you if you are eligible for this program to change from Medicaid to a private plan. You will receive information in the mail and in your account explaining what to do.
You may also receive a bill from a health insurance company. You don’t have to pay the bill unless you want this health plan. There will be no consequences for you if you don’t pay the bill.
- Confirm, change, or cancel the health plan.
Confirm: If you want to keep the health plan that MHC chose for you, you must take action so we know you want the plan. Act as soon as possible to start your coverage.
If your monthly cost is more than $0: Pay the bill for your first month of coverage. You can pay by logging into your MHC account and selecting Pay Now. You also will get a bill in the mail from the insurance company, and you can pay according to the instructions in the bill. After you pay, you will get your insurance card and can start using your coverage.
If your monthly cost is $0: Log into your account to confirm that you want this coverage.
Change: If you want to change your health plan, log into your account to compare plans and choose a different plan.
Cancel: If you want to cancel the health plan because you don’t want it or have another source of health coverage, you don’t need to do anything. Ignore the bill you get from the insurance company and we will cancel the plan if you don’t pay. Or, you can cancel the coverage by logging into your account.
